Alexander McQueen i-D magazine November 2012

Alexander McQueen i-D magazine November 2012

In October 1993, Alexander McQueen presented his debut runway collection
for Spring/Summer 1994 upstairs at the disused Bluebird Garage on the King's
Road, London. He was greeted the next day by outraged newspaper
headlines, one of which read 'Theatre of Cruelty', so shaken were the
journalists and editors by what they saw of the show. The dresses worn by the
deranged-acting models were covered in rust resembling dried bloodstains,
suggesting something violent happening in an unstable atmosphere. I
attended this show for The Face magazine and was not intimidated. I
observed the number of journalists and editors who left in a disturbed
manner before the show ended. Alexander McQueen went on to become
one of the most significant and inventive designers in the history of fashion,
so complete was his design vision. Like the uniqueness of the Alexander
McQueen garment in the photo, in the hands of a genius, clothing
develops and evolves, that is, it is changed and progresses technically
and visually, and fashion is as legitimate an area of design as any other.
The incredible Lee Alexander McQueen 17 March 1969 - 11 February
2010. Rest In Peace.
